On the road again
Feb. 28th, 2007 08:10 pmWorking late tonight from my old stomping grounds in south Florida, cramming to finish some paperwork before the Pyrates arrive to whisk me off into the Caribbean.
Had a lovely Yucatecan cochinita pibil at Los Almendros in Ciudad Mexico last night: cubes of young pork stewed in a red citrus & annatto sauce. One of the appetizers was spectacular, a queso-less tostada of shredded beef prepared almost like ceviche. Dessert was a sorbet of mamey sapote, something you can't get more than a few miles from where they grow it. Mamey is sugary-sweet, tasting of pumpkin, bubble gum, and cotton candy. Breakfast yesterday was a high-brow interpretation of huevos rancheros, a yin-yang of sunny-side-up eggs hiding a blue corn tortilla; painted in smoky chipotle sauce and sitting between dollops of guacamole and refried black beans with shredded queso fresco. Yum! Lunch was in the office cafeteria - definitely edible, but not worth reviewing. The cute little beef chamichangas with sour cream, queso fresco, and green chile sauce were fun, though.
Tonight, I'm stretching room service to the limit: conch chowder, grouper "in a bag" (still trying to remember the French culinary term for that), and a glass of over-priced fruity California shiraz. Lunch was at my favorite Israeli schawarma place (Sunrise Pita & Grill on University, just north of Sunrise). They claim to make the best pita sandwich in the USA, and I'm inclined to agree. It's glatt kosher, and they use turkey with lamb fat drippings on the rotisserie. They carve off the shredded, caramelized bits and stuff them in a pita. If that's not yummy enough, the condiments will win anyone over. One is a cucumber and tomato salad, another has marinated eggplant, another is pickled red cabbage. Stuff them all in the pita, drizzle on some tahini, tuck in some hot sauce, maybe some crispy falafel on the side, and I'm in heaven, old school, Torah-style.
Saw many old work friends in Mexico, got to work some of my special magic, more of the same to come tomorrow. Come Friday, though, I'm on holiday! I'll meet my hot lunch date up in West Palm, catch a Minstrels of Mayhem (ahem!) gig in Wellington, another FlaRF invasion on Saturday, dinner with friends, then I'm off to even more tropical waters...
