I need a quick break from the task at hand, so I think I'll scrawl down an overdue report of some of the fine food I had this weekend.

Saturday night was a performance of The Mikado at Wolf Trap with the Tuesday night pub crowd that I have been skipping out on to do my schoolwork. I took my ichiban along because she's a music geek and has my sense of humor. It was a blast. Lots of champagne flowing (we had lawn seats) and fine nibblies: mini quiches, rosemary pine nut cookies, nutella shortbread sandwich cookies, my fromage fort, a coffee-chocolate-Grand-Marnier elixer, and the sluttiest butter cake with raspberry jam filling that I've ever had. By the second act, I was no longer able to refrain from singing along in harmony with the cast and a lovely Chinese lady from Utah whose date had nodded off: "tit-willow, tit-willow, tit-willow!"

Sunday morning was the follow-up champagne brunch. I went stag, got there a little early and took salad duty. I was drinking champagne and pomegranate juice, which I think I shall christen the "Rose of Sharon." Our host made crepes, stuffed them in muffin tins, then baked eggs off in them. They were perfect in both taste and texture. There was a sort of cheesy bacon hash brown gratin (I suspect this was [livejournal.com profile] warriorsway's favorite), loads of bacon, two kinds of sausage, smoked salmon with cream cheese, a spinach/bacon/strawberry salad with champagne vinaigrette, and chocolate crepes to be filled with fruit salad, nutella, honey, maple syrup and/or Grand Marnier whipped cream. The hostess made a most decadent trifle for dessert, being chocolate cake bathed in brandy, then a layer of raspberries in Chambord, then whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder. That called for another Rose of Sharon and a mug of tea. There were leftover mini quiches and cookies from the night before, too.

The company was wonderful, and the food was sublime. The rest of the day was spent in complete lethargy, as one might expect. ;-)
