You don't often hear someone talking about how the spongy texture of chicken uterus hangs onto the sauce so well...

Wow, just wow.

I've only started watching Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel lately, but I have to say that more than 80% of what he eats makes me hungry. Stinky tofu in Taipei did not. I'd rather eat the chicken uterus.

I've seen an episode in southern Mexico, one in Trinidad, one in Alaska, and one in Taiwan. Walrus pot roast (tasting apparently of clams) made me hungry. Rancid seal fat did not. Oaxacan pizza with crickets definitely did, and so did the stewed armadillo. I've done century egg in Singapore, and it wasn't horrible. Black chicken and iguana I've had (and loved), and trinidad conch roti is one of my favorite foods in the world.

You should come visit. All the ingredients for stewed armadillo are available for free on the side of the road. I don't think I've ever seen a live one of the little buggers. And pizza with crickets? That is the stuff of nightmares! *shudders* I hate crickets!

I have a very fine recipe for armadillo, in the same cookbook as my liquid-nitrogen-and-grapefruit sorbet!

Crickets are quite yummy, but the legs tend to get stuck in your teeth. They're usually roasted and crunchy, a little nutty. They'd be fine either sweet or savory. My least one and I have shared them before, enrobed in chocolate.

Of course, now I'm thinking of munching cicadas, a la [livejournal.com profile] skivee's recent musical recitations in Ohio...
