Today is National S'Mores Day, and I have plans for some old-school s'mores in a friend's new firepit, but this has set the culinary gears in my head to turning...

What about variations on a theme? I found some interesting gourmet s'mores ideas here. I'm also thinking about Peeps. They're marshmallows, and would be really fun to skewer and roast over an open fire. What cookie and chocolate variations would you pair with Peeps?

Well, since the sugar coating will likely carmelize, you could play off that (not to mention the lovely colors)...
chocolate chip oatmeal cookies (maybe)? shortbread? maybe gingersnaps? or if you have a good recipe for butterscotch cookies...
as for chocolate, I'd try the carmel filled ghiradelli squares... they used to make butterscotch chips, but for s'mores, you might want to make a butterscotch white chocolate bar?

Just thinking about this is making my teeth hurt... :)

For regular marshmallows, I'd say a true cookie would be too much, but for Peeps, that just might work. There would be caramelized, colorful Peep gibbage spilling out around the edges! Yaay!

This past spring at NCRF, some crazy kids made S'Mores with Peeps and Cadbury eggs. They were rather hideously sweet as well as pretty awkward. (Just try squishing a big, round Cadbury egg between two graham crackers. Not. Easy.) But I appreciated the continuity of the easter candy theme, if nothing else.

Wow, nothing like mainlining high fructose corn syrup colored and thickened to resemble raw egg yolk. That makes a marshmallow Peep seem wholesome in comparison!

Now I'm stuck imagining a Cadbury egg in an egg cup, carfully slicing off the top with a little silver knife and dipping toast points in the sugary goo!

Make that French toast points! With powdered sugar! WOO HOO!!!! *ZING*

Now fly around the room propelled by all that sugar!

For those who lack access to the prehistoric beauty of raw fire, I have seen a cute way to do indoor s'mores, too: Microwave S'mores, nacho-style (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_33058,00.html)!

Well, the recipe says to use fire or an oven, but it seems like a natural fit for a microwave to me...

Well, I completely failed to find Peeps during my grocery run this afternoon, but I did find orange marshmallow peanuts and a marshmallow hot-dog-in-a-bun-with-a-squiggle-of-mustard.

The people demand to know

Tell the nice folks how those "marshmallow" subjects turned out when toasted. I have to say - I don't think anything will change the basic matter of a circus peanut. Those are just nasty. But the hot dog in a bun had potential.

The flavor of the peeps is not primarily marshmallow - so you'd really need to focus on the caramelization. Just Born (the maker of Peeps) have a Halloween line, so you won't have long to wait to try your experiment.

I wonder how fresh or homemade marshmallows would be different. Would they even stay on the stick. And what about cookies whose main ingredient is marshmallow? They'd probably plump, but would all the chocolate melt off??

These are questions that must be answered and you have dedicated yourself to this quest. Good luck.
